Can You Work During Rehab?

Fear of losing your job or cutting down hours can be a significant barrier to seeking treatment, especially if your employer provides your health coverage. Still, several options are available to work while on your journey. Keep reading to learn more about working during rehab or contact our addiction treatment center in Atlanta to begin recovery.

Can You Continue Working During Rehab?

Can you keep your job during rehab? Whether you can work during rehab depends on the type of program you attend. Recovery looks different for everyone, and multiple types of addiction treatment are available. Some levels of care, like detox and inpatient rehab, require you to live on-site while completing treatment.1

In these cases, you won’t be able to leave to attend work.1 You may also not be able to keep your phone or laptop during treatment, so remote work might not be possible.2 While exact guidelines will vary by program, most facilities have these rules in place so you can hone in on treatment and recovery.2

On the other hand, outpatient programs generally offer more flexibility. These tracks allow you to live at home while attending treatment.1 That way, you can still tend to daily responsibilities, like work, school, and family.

Rehab Programs That Allow You to Work

Outpatient programs offer the flexibility to attend rehab and not miss out on work. These programs can vary by time commitment and intensity.1 The number of hours you can work often depends on factors such as the type of outpatient program you choose and your work schedule. Here are some outpatient rehabs that allow you to work1:

Working During PHP Rehab

PHPs are the most in-depth level of outpatient care.3 That said, they generally offer the least amount of flexibility to work, depending on your job and hours. Also known as “day treatment,” PHPs require you to attend treatment onsite almost daily and return home at night, much like going to work or school.3

If you attend a PHP like ours at Empowered Recovery Center, you’ll typically spend from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in treatment, 6 days a week (Monday through Saturday). Our PHP also requires a minimum weekly commitment of 20 hours. This can make juggling work and treatment challenging, particularly if you work a traditional 9-to-5 or work in person. Depending on your schedule, you might be able to work part-time or remotely while getting the support you need in a PHP.

Working During IOP Rehab

As the middle tier of outpatient programs, IOPs provide more flexibility than PHPs.3 With IOPs, you must attend treatment a few days a week, but you’ll have more time at home and opportunities to work.3

For example, our IOP offers morning and evening schedules from Monday to Saturday. We require between 9 and 20 hours of weekly participation, with morning sessions from 9 am to 12 pm and evening sessions from 6 pm to 9 pm. These options simplify fitting work into your recovery journey. Depending on your schedule, you could even work and attend treatment on the same day.

Working During Standard Outpatient Rehab

Standard OP is the least intensive rehab program with the most flexibility.3 These programs can be ideal if you still need support but are ready to practice your recovery skills, like managing work or school stress in daily life.

Standard recovery programs similar to ours require a maximum time commitment of 9 hours. At Empowered Recovery Center, our OPs run from Monday to Saturday. That gives you several ways to participate and work based on what works best for you.

Beginning your recovery journey in an OP may not be ideal. While this option offers the most control over scheduling, OPs are often best suited for someone stepping down from a higher level of care.3,4

Virtual Rehab Options

You can work while in rehab even if you work non-traditional hours or have a long commute. We offer virtual rehab options for every level of care at Empowered Recovery Center. These online options can make treatment more accessible, especially if you have a busy work schedule.1

But you should only attend virtual sessions in your free time, not while on the clock at work. For example, if you work a remote 9-to-5, you shouldn’t schedule your PHP or morning IOP while working. Setting aside separate time for work and recovery is essential to stay focused on your journey.

Can I Take Time Off Work to Go to Rehab?

Yes, you can typically take time off from work to attend rehab. Addiction treatment is protected under the Family and Medical Leave Act (FMLA), meaning you have a right to take leave without consequences. Oftentimes, you’ll need to provide notice to your employer beforehand, but accommodations can also be made sooner for emergencies.5

While FMLA is unpaid, you might be able to use any PTO or sick leave you’ve accrued.6 It’s always best to discuss the exact details for FMLA coverage with your employer and the treatment facility you have in mind.

Will I Lose My Job if I Go to Rehab?

You generally won’t lose your job solely for going to rehab.5,7 Both the FMLA and the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) prohibit discrimination or retaliation against employees in recovery. 5,7 You could still face consequences for issues related to substance abuse, such as poor performance, misconduct, or actively using substances at work.7 But entering treatment and returning to work after completing a program should not affect your position on its own.5,7

Pros and Cons of Working During Rehab

Keeping your job during rehab has benefits and drawbacks you should consider before starting your journey. Here are some pros and cons of working during rehab:

Pros

  • Maintaining income and staying financially afloat8
  • Not having to take unpaid time off8
  • Having a sense of purpose8
  • Applying coping skills to daily work stressors9

Cons

  • May be harder to focus on recovery9,10
  • Workplace triggers or stressors can interfere with progress10

While you can keep your job during rehab, always consider the severity of your addiction, your recovery goals, and personal preferences when making this decision.11 For example, if you have a severe SUD, choosing an outpatient program instead of an inpatient one, just to keep working, can set you up for failure. You can work with an addiction specialist to find the best level of care for you.11

Empowered Recovery Center has truly been a life-changing experience for me. I entered the program last June and remained in treatment for a full year. Throughout that time, I experienced a level of care, compassion, and professionalism that sets this facility apart. My first meeting was with Rob, the Director of Operations. From day one, he made me feel welcome, helped me get settled in, and clearly explained what to expect from the program. Whenever I needed assistance, Rob consistently went above and beyond to make sure I had the support I needed. I was also incredibly fortunate to work with my therapist, Christine. She was exceptional in helping me process my emotions and identify the underlying issues that contributed to my addiction. Beyond our therapy sessions, she was always willing to listen, offer guidance, and provide support whenever I was struggling with personal challenges. The group therapy sessions were outstanding. The facilitators created an environment where everyone felt heard while keeping discussions productive, focused, and meaningful. Their guidance played a significant role in my recovery journey. Having been to treatment approximately ten times over the years, I can honestly say that Empowered stands out as one of the best recovery facilities I have ever attended. The genuine care, dedication, and commitment the staff have for their clients are evident every single day. I want to give a special thank you to Michael, Daniel, and Al. Their groups were incredibly impactful, and their passion for recovery and helping those still struggling with addiction is truly inspiring. They are committed to carrying the message of hope to anyone seeking recovery. Thank you, Empowered, for everything you've done for me. Your support has made a lasting impact on my life, and I will always be grateful for the role you played in my recovery journey

Wonderful place. Great counsolers and therapists. I really leaned a lot at this program, and feel like it really set me up to thrive out in the world. Everyone there, including other clients, helped me through a family tragedy. I still stop by every now and again. I would recommend this place to anyone who is coming out of an inpatient treatment center looking for a long term IOP program.

Empowered Recovery Center truly changed my life. When I came through the doors, I was in one of the darkest places I’d ever been. The staff met me with compassion, encouragement, and accountability every step of the way. The program gave me the tools, support, and confidence I needed to build a strong foundation for recovery. I never felt like just another client. I felt genuinely cared for by people who wanted to see me succeed long after I graduated. Today, I’m proud to say I’m 280 days sober, and I know Empowered Recovery Center played a huge role in helping me get here. Recovery isn’t easy, but having the right people in your corner makes all the difference. I will always be grateful to everyone at Empowered Recovery Center for believing in me when I needed it most. If you’re considering getting help for yourself or a loved one, I can’t recommend them enough. Choosing this program was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made.

This was a great experience! From inpatient to outpatient. We did a lot of group therapy and a lot of 1 on 1. I would highly recommend. The passion to get better is there with Enpower if you want the help! Time flies when you are actually doing the work and getting to the root of what put you there in the first place! Thankyou to all the staff! Miss you all very much! With love - Lay Lay (:
