Narcan Training & STD Testing w/Georgia Harm Reduction Coalition

Harm reduction is an essential part of addressing substance use and public health in a compassionate, effective way. We believe that everyone deserves access to tools and education that can save lives, which is why Empowered Recovery Center is hosting a free harm reduction event in partnership with the Georgia Harm Reduction Coalition.

Taking place on April 26, 2025, this event is part of our ongoing effort to reduce the harm associated with drug use while increasing access to life-saving resources in our community. From Narcan training to free HIV and Hepatitis C testing, this event is a chance for Atlanta-area residents to learn, connect, and stay safe.

What Is Harm Reduction?

Harm reduction is a public health strategy aimed at reducing the negative consequences of drug use and risky behaviors without requiring abstinence. Instead of punishing individuals for their behaviors, harm reduction meets people where they are and empowers them with education, tools, and support to reduce harm and improve their health.

Harm reduction services like free Narcan training, STD testing, needle exchange programs, and access to treatment information can significantly lower rates of overdose, HIV, Hepatitis C, and other health issues. These programs also serve as a bridge to treatment and recovery, offering people an entry point into care when they’re ready.

At its core, harm reduction is about saving lives, preserving dignity, and building healthier communities.

What to Expect at Our Harm Reduction Event in Atlanta

Our harm reduction event is free and open to the public. Whether you or someone you love is at risk, or you’re simply interested in learning more, we welcome you to join us. Attendees can expect:

Free Narcan training (with free take-home Narcan kits)
Free HIV and Hepatitis C testing
Sexual health education and pregnancy tests
Information about HIV treatment, PrEP, and PEP
Resources and support related to harm reduction, addiction, and overall wellness

Our team and the Georgia Harm Reduction Coalition will be on-site to answer questions, provide guidance, and connect attendees with additional support services as needed.

The Georgia Harm Reduction Coalition (GHRC) is a statewide advocacy and direct-service organization that provides compassionate health and prevention services to vulnerable communities. From HIV prevention and syringe services to overdose education and Narcan distribution, GHRC plays a vital role in harm reduction across Georgia.

I entered the program last June and remained in treatment for a full year. Throughout that time, I experienced a level of care, compassion, and professionalism that sets this facility apart. My first meeting was with Rob, the Director of Operations. From day one, he made me feel welcome, helped me get settled in, and clearly explained what to expect from the program. Whenever I needed assistance, Rob consistently went above and beyond to make sure I had the support I needed. I was also incredibly fortunate to work with my therapist, Christine. She was exceptional in helping me process my emotions and identify the underlying issues that contributed to my addiction. Beyond our therapy sessions, she was always willing to listen, offer guidance, and provide support whenever I was struggling with personal challenges. The group therapy sessions were outstanding. The facilitators created an environment where everyone felt heard while keeping discussions productive, focused, and meaningful. Their guidance played a significant role in my recovery journey. Having been to treatment approximately ten times over the years, I can honestly say that Empowered stands out as one of the best recovery facilities I have ever attended. The genuine care, dedication, and commitment the staff have for their clients are evident every single day. I want to give a special thank you to Michael, Daniel, and Al. Their groups were incredibly impactful, and their passion for recovery and helping those still struggling with addiction is truly inspiring. I really leaned a lot at this program, and feel like it really set me up to thrive out in the world. Everyone there, including other clients, helped me through a family tragedy.
