Alcohol Addiction

Drinking in moderation is a normal part of many cultures; over eighty-five percent of adults in the United States have drunk alcohol at some point in their lives.

However, when you start drinking too much, too frequently or become dependent on alcohol, drinking can become very dangerous. According to the National Institute on Alcoholism and Alcohol Abuse, alcohol use disorders (AUD) affect over 14.5 million people each year.

What is Alcohol Addiction?

Alcohol addiction, or alcoholism, is when you compulsively seek and drink alcohol, despite its negative consequences. It is characterized by physical changes in the brain that produce strong urges to drink alcohol, which can be very difficult to resist.

Alcohol addiction is different from other types of AUD like binge drinking, heavy drinking, or alcohol dependence. However, addiction often develops from excessive drinking and dependence, and any kind of alcohol abuse is problematic and may require treatment.

Nationwide, the effects are devastating. Over 95,000 people die from alcohol-related causes each year. In 2010, alcohol misuse cost the state $210bn.

Drug Addiction

Drug addiction is a pervasive problem in the United States – over 20 million people struggle with SUD. Substance abuse can affect all aspects of a person’s life, such as health, work, and family life. It also causes extensive social and economic problems, costing over $600bn each year.

Every drug affects the body differently. However, they can be classified into four main categories:

  • Depressants – These include alcohol and benzodiazepines.
  • Stimulants – These include cocaine and amphetamines.
  • Opium-derived drugs – These drugs include heroin and opioid painkillers.
  • Hallucinogens – These include substances such as lysergic acid diethylamide (LSD).

People can become addicted to illicit drugs, like heroin and prescription drugs, like opiate painkillers or benzodiazepines. While it is possible to become addicted to some drugs by following a prescription, most addiction develops from abusing prescription drugs.

What Are the Signs and Symptoms of Drug Addiction?

Sometimes it can be hard to tell if you or a loved one is struggling with drug addiction. Here are some signs to look out for:

  • Being unable to stop taking drugs when you want to, even when it’s causing you problems
  • Spending a lot of time thinking about how to obtain drugs
  • Losing interest in everyday activities
  • Lying or stealing money to obtain drugs

What Are the Dangers of Drug Addiction?

Drug addiction puts you at risk of a range of health and social problems.

These include:

  • Long-term health problems, including heart, cardiovascular, and brain damage
  • Increased risk of mental health conditions
  • Experiencing withdrawal symptoms when you try to stop

Behavioral Addiction

Many people assume that addictions always involve substances like alcohol, tobacco, and other drugs. However, you can also develop an addiction to specific behaviors that give you a pleasurable high. The scientific community is increasingly recognizing the prevalence of these addictions – in 2015 Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM-5) formally classified gambling disorder as a behavioral addiction.

Some of the most common kinds of behavioral addiction are:

Gambling addiction
Shopping addiction
Sex addiction

How Do Behavioral Addictions Develop?

Behavioral addictions develop similarly to drug addictions – by repeatedly engaging in an activity over a period of time. When you engage in pleasurable activities, your brain releases a small amount of dopamine that makes you feel good.

Over time, your brain connects the activity with this feeling and produces urges to repeat the experience. These urges can become so powerful that you want to engage in the activity even when it is harmful to yourself and others.

Dual Diagnosis

According to research by SAMHSA, almost half of people with a substance use disorder also struggle with a co-occurring mental health condition. Mental disorders like anxiety, unresolved trauma, and depression can be driving factors behind addictive behavior. They can also complicate treatment, deplete your energy, and affect your ability to communicate openly with a therapist.

Treating co-occurring disorders alongside addiction is crucial to successful recovery. If left unaddressed, mental health issues can restart addictive behavior even after long periods of abstinence.
